The other relevant detail: my wife and I have one car, because financially it makes more sense for us to have one local car and then rent on the rare occasions we drive out of town. I also rent cars for work, since I travel 30% of the time. I am a SUPER-regular rental car customer.
I showed up, and the clerk informed me I'd also need my insurance card (which was not specified in the agreement, but fine) and that I wouldn't be getting unlimited miles. "But my rental agreement says explicitly that I do," I said. I wouldn't have made an issue of it, I explained, but I'd booked the car for a long road trip and would not have booked the car if I hadn't gotten unlimited miles.
Highly recommended.
I told her that there was no indication anywhere that there was a different agreement for locals. I read all the details that were available to me. She was rude and dismissive and refused to honor the deal.
I would not waste my time with other rental places when we get VIP treatment with advantage.
He'd taken my driver's license and seen that I was local. He told me locals don't get unlimited miles. OK, that's a weird policy anyway, but I pointed out that it wasn't in the rental agreement. "It's in the fine print -- a lot of people don't read that," he told me.
First car was not clean and service engine light was on. We got a replacement car right away. At the airport two national rent a car and enterprise pick up buses came and left picking up passengers. My husband and I were still waiting for the advantage bus to pick us up in the cold and wind. I wondered if my husband had the correct company because it took so long to come pick us up. I don’t think I’ll let my husband use them again when visiting family in North Carolina.
I rent cars regularly from multiple different companies, so I have a wide range of experiences. I will *never* rent from Advantage again, and I would encourage everyone else to refrain from renting from them as well.
I got out the rental agreement. It says "unlimited miles." I showed that to him.
Quick Shuttle transfer and extremely friendly staff. Got the vehicle very quickly that was the highlight of the rental experience. The Late Model Toyota Sienna minivan that I got had some issues though. Only 11 K miles on it but low tire pressure light was on. Try to add air to the tires only to find out the front two tires are not the originals and they are nearly completely bald. I'm assuming at some point the wheels and tires were switched from a different vehicle hence why the low tire pressure warning was on because the sensors aren't for the right Wheels. Why they are renting a minivan with the incorrect tires, bald ones in a vehicle that hauls around 8 people is beyond me.
I booked through Hotwire. I read the rental agreement carefully. It specified that I'd get unlimited miles, and that I'd have to bring my driver's license and credit card. That's all fine.
This has never happened to me at any other rental agency. Even when other agencies have strange policies, the people that work there have always expressed interest in helping me get the service I need. I don't even mind a little extra hassle if they seem interested in helping -- but the two staff members I spoke with gave no indication they cared even a little bit.
I explained I wouldn't be able to rent the car if I didn't get this deal, because it'd be prohibitively expensive. He said that if I talked to the manager and showed her the agreement, she might honor it.
But Advantage, in trying to shake me down for a little money today, lost probably thousands of dollars of my future business.
The manager didn't care even a little bit. I pointed out that I'd read the contract in full. She said "yes, but we have a different contract for locals." I said that wasn't anywhere on the rental agreement. She said I could pay extra if I wanted the miles and quoted me a number that was 250% what I'd already paid.
So I'm out about $75 for cabs to and from the airport. I didn't get to take the trip I wanted to take. That wasn't fun.
Short version: Advantage would not honor the rental agreement I made, tried to charge me more than twice what I'd agreed to pay, and treated me rudely and dismissively while they appeared utterly uninterested in helping resolve the situation.
I hope they lose yours too.
I rented at Advantage at RDU and found everything to be exactly as advertised. They had the best rates and the car was good. I was helped through my special requests by a very professional man at the counter named Salaam. I would rent again here without hesitation.
"OK, but show me the fine print -- I can prove it to you right now" he said. We got out the fine print. He was wrong: there was nothing in there to indicate I wouldn't get unlimited miles.
Keep it up SALAAM
We rented car last week and salaam was other side of counter. He is not only polite, and experience, he goes extra miles to make sure we are happy and comfortable with our rental.
Special thanks to corporate for have great helpful person like salaam.
